Periareolar means around the darker part located at the peak of the breast. Because the areola is naturally darker and its border is slightly raised, it makes an excellent location for the incision as the resulting scar can be easily hidden. The incision is made partially around the areola.

Periareolar incisions also allow for relatively easy placement of the implant and positioning to achieve symmetry.

The transaxillary incision is an incision made in the armpit. Typically performed during the placement of saline implants, which can be filled to the desired size after being placed in the body, the resulting scar is often hidden in the discreet location of the armpit where a natural fold is located.
